Welcome to the First Afaan Oromo
Charter School in the United States!
Bultum Academy is proud to introduce a groundbreaking educational institution committed to empowering students through language and cultural identity. As the first charter school in the United States to teach Afaan Oromo, we offer a unique and immersive experience that blends academic excellence with the richness of Oromo heritage. Our school provides a supportive environment where students are not only prepared for academic success but also nurtured to develop a deep connection to their cultural roots.
Discovering the Rich History of Afaan Oromo
Until 1991
The Afaan Oromo language is Africa's fourth most widely spoken native language, with a resilient history. Until 1991, it faced significant restrictions in Ethiopia, where it was banned from educational institutions. Once the ban was lifted, Afaan Oromo began to be taught in schools, leading to the emergence of the "Qubee" generation, who embraced their linguistic heritage. In diaspora communities, however, language learning was often confined to weekend schools. Minnesota is home to America’s largest Oromo community, and Bultum Academy stands as the first charter school in the world to offer Afaan Oromo through immersive teaching. This innovative approach provides students with a unique opportunity to engage with their language and culture every day.
